The area is attracting
an increasing number of artists, sculptors, potters,
authors and a variety
of home based businesses. Whereas six years
ago, it was still possible to buy a house in Portland
for as little as $12,000, finding anything
under
$100,000 these days is almost impossible.
While six months ago at least half a dozen shops
were vacant in the town, new businesses such as,
a
café, an aroma therapy practitioner,
and a rare books and fine art gallery have
opened
as savvy entrepreneurs recognise the potential
for this small town. Opportunities still
exist for new businesses who want to cater
to the
growing number of visitors and new residents
coming into
the town.
Portland
is only 2 1/2 hours from Sydney through the picturesque
Blue Mountains and with easy driving distances to Lithgow
and Bathurst make Portland an attractive destination
for
a
growing number of people looking for a “sea
change” from
the hectic pace of the big city. Improved telecommuting
via the internet, email and fax now allows many
more people to enjoy a country lifestyle without
sacrificing their daytime job or business.
